Custom maps
Run a map made by someone else or by you instead of a generated one. Custom Maps stores your .map files so you can pick them when you wipe.
Upload a map
- Open Custom Maps in the RUST sidebar group.
- In the Upload a map box, press Choose a .map file or drop the file on the box. The file must be a
.mapof up to 100 MB. - The map appears under Your maps. Press Refresh if it does not show up.
Use the map on your server
Uploading does not change the server. Apply the map with a wipe:
- Open Wipes.
- In the Custom map field, pick your map from the ones you uploaded.
- Choose Run now or Schedule, keep Create a backup first ticked, and press Wipe now (or schedule it).
- When the server starts, check the console until you see Server startup complete.
A custom map has its own size and terrain, so Map size and Map seed normally do not apply. To return to a generated map, wipe again with Custom map empty and your own size and seed.
tip
Large custom maps load slowly. The first start with a new map can take several minutes; do not restart it.
Where to get maps
- Map websites and community Discords share downloadable
.mapfiles. - Build your own with a map editor; RustEdit is the most common. Some RustEdit maps need a plugin or extension installed on the server. Read the author's instructions first, and ask us if unsure.
Common problems
- The server does not start with the map. Maps made for another Rust version can fail to load. Read the console error and try the author's latest version.
- The file will not upload. It must end in
.mapand be at most 100 MB. - Players see a different map than expected. The wipe must have finished and the server restarted after you selected the map.
- Plugins misbehave on the map. Custom prefabs and monuments can confuse some plugins. Test with fewer plugins.
Still stuck: ask Fenix to read your console, or open a ticket.
