Files and SFTP

Browse, edit and upload server files in the browser or over SFTP. Your server lives in /home/container, where the page opens.

The file manager

Above the list are the path (home / container) and three buttons:

  • Create Directory makes a folder in the current folder.
  • Upload sends files from your computer.
  • New File creates an empty file and opens it for editing.

Rows show name, size (files) and last change. Click the path at the top to go back up.

Actions on a file or folder

Right-click a row, or use its ... menu:

  • Rename
  • Move
  • Permissions
  • Archive (compress)
  • Unarchive (extract)
  • Download
  • Delete

Tick the boxes on the left to act on several items at once.

Edit a file in the browser

  1. Click the file name, for example server.properties or bukkit.yml.
  2. Edit and save.
  3. Restart the server if the game only reads that file at start (see Console).
tip

Copy an important file or make a backup before editing it. A typo in a config can stop the server from starting.

Upload files

  1. Open the folder where the files should go (for example plugins).
  2. Click Upload and choose your files.
  3. Wait for the upload to finish before restarting the server.

For many or large files, upload one .zip and use Unarchive in the ... menu: faster and safer than hundreds of small uploads.

SFTP

SFTP works with programs like FileZilla or WinSCP and is the best way to move big worlds, many plugins or whole backups.

Where to find your details

The SFTP box at the top of the Files page shows:

  • Host: the SFTP server address.
  • Port: 2022.
  • User: your panel username and the 8-character server ID, joined by a dot (for example yourname.1a2b3c4d).
  • Password: the SFTP password you set in Settings.

Copy Host and User from the box rather than typing them.

Set your SFTP password or an SSH key

Your account login password does not work for SFTP. Set a separate one:

  1. Open Settings and go to SFTP access.
  2. Click Set an SFTP password and choose a password.
  3. Or click Add an SSH key and paste your public key. Until you set a password, SFTP only works with an SSH key.

The SFTP password and the SSH keys belong to your account, so they work on all your servers. Only the User changes from server to server. More in Settings.

Connect with FileZilla

  1. Open File > Site Manager and click New site.
  2. Protocol: SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol.
  3. Host: paste the host from the SFTP box.
  4. Port: 2022.
  5. Logon Type: Normal, then enter the User and your SFTP password.
  6. Click Connect. Accept the host key the first time.

Connect with WinSCP

  1. Click New Session.
  2. File protocol: SFTP.
  3. Host name: paste the host. Port number: 2022.
  4. Enter the User name and your SFTP password.
  5. Click Login and accept the host key the first time.

Common problems

  • Login fails: check that you set an SFTP password in Settings > SFTP access and that you did not use your store password. Check that the user includes the server ID.
  • Connection times out: make sure the port is 2022 and the protocol is SFTP, not FTP.
  • Cannot save a file: if you are a subuser, you may not have file permissions. Ask the server owner.
  • Changes do not apply: most game config files are read on start. Restart the server.
