Install and manage mods

Mods change the game itself: new blocks, creatures, machines and mechanics. The Mods page installs mods from Modrinth directly from the panel.

Mods replaces Plugins in the MINECRAFT sidebar group when your server runs a mod loader: Fabric, Forge or NeoForge. To switch loader, see Versions. For plugins instead, see Plugins.

The page header shows what your server runs, for example "Fabric · Minecraft 1.21.4", so you know which mods fit.

Install a mod

  1. Open Mods in the MINECRAFT group.
  2. On the Browse tab, look through the list or use Search.
  3. Click Install. The panel picks the file matching your loader and Minecraft version.
  4. Restart the server from the Console. Restart after every install, update or delete.

If the panel cannot confirm your loader or version, installing is disabled. Check your software on Versions.

Manage installed mods

Open the Installed tab.

  • Update available appears when a newer file exists. Click Update, then restart.
  • Delete removes the mod. Restart afterwards.
  • Config folder is a shortcut to the mod configuration files in Files.

Dependencies and duplicates

Many mods need another mod (a library or API). The page flags problems:

  • Another mod needs this one warns you before you delete a mod that something else depends on.
  • Possible duplicate warns you when two installed mods look like the same mod. Keep only one.

If the server crashes on start, the console usually names the missing or conflicting mod. Install the missing one, or remove the duplicate.

Players need the same mods

Unlike plugins, mods run on both sides. Every player needs a matching loader and the same mods and Minecraft version to join. Purely server-side mods do not need to be on the client; if unsure, assume they do.

Tell your players the exact loader, Minecraft version and mods.

Modpacks

The Mods page installs one mod at a time. For a modpack:

  • Install each mod individually from the page, if available on Modrinth.
  • Or upload the .jar files: open Files, go into the mods folder and click Upload (or use SFTP).

The pack's Minecraft version and loader must match Versions. Restart the server after uploading.

tip

Modded servers use more memory. Watch the MEMORY card on the Console after adding large mods. If it stays close to full, use fewer mods or a larger plan.

Common problems

  • The server does not start after adding a mod. Look at the console for the mod name in the error. Delete that mod, or add the missing dependency.
  • Players cannot join: mod mismatch. Their mods or Minecraft version differ from the server. Match them exactly.
  • The mod needs a different loader. A Forge mod will not run on Fabric. Choose the right loader on Versions.
  • A change broke the server. Restore a backup from Backups.

Fenix can read the console and explain mod errors.
